WHERE TO STAY IN TRINIDAD
First, it’s essential to plan as far in advance as possible. Trinidad carnival takes place in February, and accommodations fill up quickly. So quick in fact that regular goers sometimes book for the upcoming year before they even check out during their current say. To ensure you have a place to stay, book your hotel or vacation rental well in advance.
When it comes to luxury hotels in Trinidad, there are a few options to choose from. Top hotel choices that range from a stylish and modern stay. With sleek designs, a pool, stunning views, and excellent service, these hotels are the perfect base for resting between fetes or exploring the city. These are just three options to start your search.
TRINIDAD CARNIVAL PLANNING GUIDE
Playing Mas – “Pretty Mas” for most is the “main show” and as such much prep goes into it. Securing a costume for di road can be exciting.
With options from a variety of bands, have presented a range of styles, colors, and themes in three levels: backline, midline, and frontline. With many bands to select from it’s important to do your research on which bands offer the best total package and pricing range for your budget. Once you select some bands you like set your calendar for “band launch releases” which are fashion shows for the coming theme and costume options.
J’Ouvert – Sometimes notes as the official start of carnival, taking place early in the morning, usually 4 am, before carnival Monday mas. One of my favorite parts of carnival is J’ouvert. It’s self-express and freedom on another level. Dancing through the streets early in the morning and getting dirty with paint or mud with little to no care in that moment.
Where to Fete – During carnival season there seems to be an endless amount of fetes – trust me, team no sleep is very real. On an average day, there could be 4 or more fetes happening that cover all-inclusive, drink-inclusive, wet-fete, paint fete, and the list goes on and on. With so many options, believe me, there is something for everyone. The most important thing to remember is fete tickets go fast so it is imperative to have your schedule line-up, backups, and money ready prior to ticket drop dates.
Monday Mas – I always tell people Monday mas is practice for “Pretty Mas”. It’s the calm before the real show and gives you just a small taste of what to expect. Monday wear outfits are simplified for most, usually not custom. Have fun and go all out or simple with a cute swim piece.
Cost – with high demand and limited supply prices may triple even quadruple during carnival season for everything from accommodations to drivers and everything in between. Overall budget can range greatly generally averaging $4,500 depending on taste, itinerary, and when someone starts planning.
GENERAL TIPS
- Learn the history and some basics – Carnival isn’t just some big street party where people dress up and dance. It’s a cultural celebration, appreciation, and acknowledgment of history past. Many aspects of carnival have a meaning that’s rooted in purpose. From J’ouvert to pretty mas and beyond.
- Get familiar with the music – Soca and Calypso are the primary genres of music played during the event and it’s great!
- Pace yourself – With nonstop partying and an overflow of drinks & food it can be easy to get caught with no sleep moderation is imperative.
- Pick up a workout routine – Seriously! Not to look good per se but to get your strength and stamina up through all the partying, dancing, and more.
- Dress for comfort – Honestly, carnival may not be the time for heels or fussing with any of your outfits.
- Sun protection & water are key – It gets hot! The Trini sun is something serious and not to be played with! Bring loads of sunscreen and stay hydrated.
PLACES TO EXPLORE & THINGS TO DO IN TRINIDAD
Yes, one of the most popular things to do in Trinidad is to attend the carnival itself. The event takes place in February and features a parade of colorful costumes, live music, and non-stop partying. But did you know there are plenty of other things to do or see in Trinidad, from its historic sites and monuments to its natural wonders?
Fort George is a must-see attraction, as it offers stunning views of the city and the Caribbean Sea. Another top spot is Pitch Lake, which is a large natural lake that is known for its black tar. Visitors can take a tour of the lake and learn about its history and geology.
Other top activities include visiting the Emperor Valley Zoo, which is home to a wide variety of animals from around the world, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, which is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.
